The Biggest ABA Billing Update in Years
---------------------------------------

In September 2025, the ABA Coding Coalition and the AMA CPT Editorial Panel approved a sweeping set of changes to the CPT codes that govern how ABA services are billed. These changes take effect **January 1, 2027**, with full code descriptors scheduled for publication in the 2027 CPT Professional Code Book later this year.

This isn’t a minor tweak. It’s the most significant restructuring of ABA billing codes since the current 97151-97158 code set was introduced. Every ABA practice — whether you bill insurance, work with school districts, or serve private-pay families — needs to understand what’s coming and prepare now.

What’s Changing
---------------

Here’s what the AMA has confirmed:

- **Six new CPT codes** are being added to the ABA code set
- **Revisions to codes 97151-97158** — the current assessment and treatment codes that form the backbone of ABA billing
- **Deletion of temporary T-codes** — placeholder codes that have been used in the interim are being phased out
- **Updated coding guidelines** for proper usage, modifier requirements, and documentation standards

The exact code numbers and full descriptors were confidential until the AMA published them in September 2026. See the update below.

Update: The Six Codes Are Now Public
------------------------------------

The AMA published the 2027 CPT code set in September 2026, and the ABA Coding Coalition released its crosswalk. The six new codes are **97148, +97149, 97159, +97160, 97173, and 97180**. 0362T and 0373T are permanently deleted, and 97155 now covers only a QHP directing a technician, with solo QHP treatment moving to 97173.

An earlier version of this post listed six expected code categories based on early reporting. Those categories did not match the final codes, so we removed them. For the code-by-code crosswalk and a 90-day checklist, read [The 2027 ABA CPT Codes Are Out](/blog/2026/10/2027-aba-cpt-codes-97173-97180-97155-split).

Why This Matters for Your Practice
----------------------------------

New codes don’t just mean new numbers. They ripple through every part of your billing operation:

- **New billing workflows** — Staff need to know when and how to use each new code, including modifier requirements and documentation standards
- **Fee schedule updates** — Every payer contract needs new rates negotiated for six additional codes
- **Payer authorization rules** — Insurance companies will set their own coverage policies, MUE limits, and prior authorization requirements for each new code
- **Credential mapping** — Some codes may have different credential requirements (BCBA vs. BCaBA vs. RBT)
- **Revenue impact** — Codes like care coordination and caregiver training may unlock revenue for work your team already does but can’t currently bill

Practices running rigid billing systems — or worse, spreadsheets and manual processes — face real disruption risk on January 1, 2027. If your EMR can’t add new service codes without a software update or vendor intervention, you’re already behind.

How StreamABA Handles This
--------------------------

StreamABA was built with exactly this kind of change in mind. Our billing architecture is fully configurable by your practice — no developer, no ticket, no waiting for a software release.

**Configurable service codes.** Add, edit, or retire billing codes directly in Settings. When the new CPT codes are published, you can enter them yourself the same day.

**Effective date ranges.** Pre-load the six new codes with a January 1, 2027 start date well before the transition. Set end dates on retiring T-codes so they stop appearing in new sessions automatically while remaining available for historical records.

**Payer-specific fee schedules.** Set rates per payer per code with their own effective dates. Roll out new fee schedules payer-by-payer as you negotiate contracts — no all-or-nothing cutover.

**Payer-specific rules.** Configure modifier requirements, Maximum Units of Service (MUE) limits, and credential requirements per code per payer. Each insurance company’s unique rules get their own configuration.

**Staff rate tracking.** Assign compensation rates to new codes immediately, so profitability reporting stays accurate from day one.

The bottom line: when the new codes are published, StreamABA customers can be billing on them the same day — without waiting for a software update.

Preparing Now: Your 2027 CPT Readiness Checklist
------------------------------------------------

You don’t need to wait for the exact code numbers to start preparing. Here’s what you can do today:

- **Stay informed.** Follow the [ABA Coding Coalition](https://www.abacodes.org/) for official updates as code descriptors are released
- **Audit your current code usage.** Understand your practice’s billing mix across existing 97151-97158 codes and any T-codes you currently use
- **Review payer contracts.** Identify which contracts need renegotiation and start early conversations with payer representatives about the upcoming changes
- **Identify new revenue opportunities.** If your team already does care coordination or caregiver training, the new codes may let you bill for work that’s currently unbillable
- **Plan staff training.** Budget time in Q3/Q4 2026 for BCBA and billing staff training on new code selection and documentation requirements
- **Confirm your EMR is ready.** Make sure your practice management system can handle new codes, effective dates, and payer-specific configurations without vendor dependency

We’ll Keep You Updated
----------------------

This is a developing story, and we’ll continue publishing detailed guidance as the ABA Coding Coalition and AMA release more information. Once the full code descriptors are public, we’ll follow up with:

- A detailed code-by-code breakdown with billing guidance
- StreamABA-specific setup instructions for the new codes
- Payer policy tracking as major insurers publish their coverage decisions

billing ### The 2027 ABA CPT Codes Are Out. 97155 Splits in Two, and BCBAs Can Finally Bill for Indirect Work.

The AMA released the 2027 CPT code set in September, and the ABA Coding Coalition published the crosswalk. Six new codes take effect January 1: 97148, +97149, 97159, +97160, 97173, and 97180. 0362T and 0373T are permanently deleted. BCBAs who treat a client alone move off 97155 to 97173, and 97180 covers non-face-to-face clinical work that was never separately billable before. Here's the code-by-code crosswalk and what to do before your next authorization request.
