When Your ABA Tech Stack Is the Risk — And What to Do About It
================================================================

MissionViewpoint warns that ABA tech platforms face capital compression, stranded dependency risk, and care model misalignment. Here's what practice owners should demand from their software — and how StreamABA is built to avoid the structural risks Dickson identifies.

Your Software Is a Structural Bet
---------------------------------

Scott Dickson published a piece on MissionViewpoint this month titled [When the Autism Tech Stack Becomes the Risk](https://www.missionviewpoint.com/when-the-autism-tech-stack-becomes-the-risk/). His argument: the software layer underneath ABA providers is carrying more structural risk than anyone in the industry is pricing in.

He’s not wrong. And if you’re a practice owner who hasn’t thought about this, you should.

Dickson’s piece is aimed at investors evaluating ABA platform companies. But the implications land squarely on practice owners — because when your platform recapitalizes, merges, stalls, or pivots, you’re the one holding the operational bag.

The Risks Dickson Identified
----------------------------

The piece maps out six categories of structural risk in ABA technology. Here’s the short version:

**Capital compression.** Roper Technologies acquired CentralReach in 2025. Roper’s stock has since dropped from $570 to $315. Enterprise software multiples are compressing. VC firms are rotating toward AI-native categories. When public benchmarks reset, private valuations follow — and the platforms that raised at 2024 prices now face recapitalization pressure.

**Crowded market, thinning differentiation.** Silna Health, Frontera Health, Camber, Motivity, Passage Health, Brellium — the 2025 funding wave touched a lot of companies. Burn tolerance is declining. Platforms without durable differentiation face “recapitalization pressure, consolidation, or quiet exit.”

**Outcome framework misalignment.** There’s no universally agreed-upon way to measure “meaningful progress” in ABA. Payors, providers, and developmental approaches each define it differently. If your platform’s definition of progress doesn’t match what payors are demanding in three years, the product roadmap you’re building on may not be relevant.

**Care model variability.** Most enterprise ABA platforms were built around high-intensity service models — 30-40 hours a week, session-based billing, predictable supervision ratios. If authorized hours decline, hybrid models gain reimbursement, or intensity compression hits your market, those platform assumptions break. Scheduling density tightens. Supervision forecasting becomes unpredictable. Integration gaps between scheduling, documentation, and billing become visible.

**The modular vs. monolithic paradox.** Providers want a system that’s operationally all-in-one but architecturally open. Too closed and you fear lock-in. Too open and the platform risks commoditization. This tension is straining every enterprise ABA vendor.

**Data ownership.** Who owns the data lake? Is it the practice management system? The provider? An AI overlay that ingests across platforms? If your platform relationship changes, where does your longitudinal clinical data live?

The Term That Should Scare Every Practice Owner
-----------------------------------------------

Dickson coins a phrase that should be on every ops leader’s whiteboard: **stranded dependency.**

> If a portfolio company standardizes on a platform that later recapitalizes, narrows its feature lane, merges, or stalls — “the software becomes a stranded dependency.”

Translation for practice owners: if the platform you built your operations on becomes someone else’s acquisition target, runs out of runway, or decides your segment isn’t profitable enough to keep investing in — you’re stuck. Your clinical data is in their system. Your billing workflows are built on their logic. Your staff is trained on their interface. And your leverage is zero.

This isn’t theoretical. It’s the natural outcome of a market where too many platforms raised too much money at too-high valuations and now face a reckoning.

What Practice Owners Should Be Asking
-------------------------------------

Dickson’s piece is investor-facing, but the evaluation framework applies directly to the practice owner choosing — or stuck with — a platform. Here’s what you should be asking:

### How is this company funded?

A platform that raised $50M at a peak-market valuation is under pressure to justify that valuation or get recapitalized. A platform that’s profitable or capital-efficient doesn’t face the same existential timeline. When your vendor’s burn rate becomes your business continuity risk, the funding model matters.

### What happens to my data if this company gets acquired?

If your platform gets acquired by a Roper or a private equity roll-up, what are the contractual terms around your data? Can you export it in a usable format? Is your clinical data portable, or is it locked in a proprietary schema that only works inside their system? If you can’t answer this, you have a stranded dependency today — you just haven’t needed to act on it yet.

### Is this platform built for the care model I deliver in three years?

Dickson’s care model variability point is the sleeper risk. If your platform was designed for 40-hour-a-week center-based ABA and your market is moving toward 15-20 hours of hybrid home/telehealth/center services, does the scheduling engine still work? Does the billing logic handle the new modifier requirements? Does the supervision tracking accommodate a fundamentally different ratio? If the answer is “we’d need to build that,” your platform is one care model shift away from being a constraint instead of an enabler.

### Who owns the outcome measurement framework?

As payors like [Centene build dedicated ABA task forces](/blog/centene-aba-crackdown-what-small-practices-need-to-know) and federal auditors flag [documentation failures across every state they audit](/blog/oig-audit-trail-documentation-failures-by-cpt-code), the definition of “outcomes” is becoming a compliance question — not just a clinical one. If your platform’s outcome measurement is rigid, proprietary, or disconnected from what payors are actually asking for, you’re building your compliance posture on someone else’s assumptions.

### Can I access my own data with my own tools?

This is Dickson’s data ownership question, made operational. If you want to run your own analysis, build a custom report, or connect an AI tool to your clinical and operational data — can you? Or does every question have to go through your vendor’s reporting module? The platform that makes your data accessible is the one that isn’t afraid of you outgrowing a single feature.

How We Think About This at StreamABA
------------------------------------

We read Dickson’s piece as a validation of choices we’ve already made. Not because we predicted his exact framing, but because the risks he identifies are the ones we built against.

**We’re not building for a liquidation event.** StreamABA isn’t a venture-backed platform chasing a 2025 valuation that needs to justify itself to a growth equity board in 2027. We’re building a product that ABA practices will use for the next decade. That means making decisions based on what’s right for the practice, not what’s right for the next funding round.

**We built for care model flexibility from day one.** Our scheduling, billing, and supervision tracking don’t assume a single service model. Center-based, home-based, telehealth, hybrid, group, individual — the system handles what you deliver today and what you’ll deliver when the care model shifts. Because it will shift. [Centene is already pushing it](/blog/centene-aba-crackdown-what-small-practices-need-to-know). Reimbursement changes will follow.

**Your data is yours — and the system is built around that.** StreamABA keeps clinical, operational, and financial data in one unified model so reporting can answer questions that normally fall between systems. Your clinical and operational data does not live behind a proprietary wall that only one module can read.

**Compliance is enforced at the point of entry, not after the fact.** The OIG audits we [wrote about this week](/blog/oig-audit-trail-documentation-failures-by-cpt-code) found documentation failures in 100% of sampled claims across four states. Our system validates session notes against CPT codes before claims generate. It blocks unsigned notes. It checks credentialing status at the claim level. These aren’t features we’re adding because auditors are looking — they’re how the system was designed, because documentation integrity is a platform-level responsibility.

The Underwriting Question for Practice Owners
---------------------------------------------

Dickson reframes the investor underwriting question from “Will the provider grow?” to “Will the software layer beneath that provider remain durable, capitalized, and roadmap-relevant over a 3-5 year hold?”

Practice owners should be asking themselves the same thing:

**Will the platform I’m running my practice on still be independently operated, actively developed, and aligned with my care model in 2029?**

If you can’t answer that with confidence, you have a technology risk that’s at least as real as your clinical, regulatory, and payer risks. And unlike those risks, this one is entirely within your control to address.

technology ### The Hidden Cost of Building Your Own ABA Tech Stack

AI makes it easy to write code. It doesn't make it easy to run it. Scott Dickson's recent piece nailed this, and we see it play out every week with ABA providers who tried to build their own systems. Here's what actually breaks — and what the alternative looks like when AI is built into the platform from day one.

Centene's CEO just told investors that behavioral health — driven by ABA — accounts for half their excess Medicaid costs. They've built a 29-state task force, they're hiring BCBAs to review your authorizations, and they've already cut outlier providers. Here's what they're looking for and how to make sure you're not on the list.
