The BACB’s 2027 certification requirements take effect January 1. Under the BACB’s transition rule, an application is reviewed under the current 2022 requirements only if the *complete* application arrives by the end of this year. The BACB defines complete precisely: “Your complete application (including payment and all required documents) must be received by December 31, 2026.” “Received” is the important word. A paid application waiting on an official transcript is not complete, and the BACB gives applicants 90 days after payment to send documents. That grace period does not stretch the December 31 cutoff. A trainee who pays on December 20 and is still waiting on a registrar in January has missed the window. For a practice, this goes beyond a trainee’s paperwork. Every trainee who misses the cutoff and has to requalify under 2027 rules is a future BCBA who sits on your staff longer before they can carry a caseload. In a market where [half of first-time candidates fail the exam](/blog/2026/04/bcba-exam-pass-rate-workforce-crunch), you can’t afford to lose months to a missing transcript. What Changes for BCBA Applicants -------------------------------- **Two pathways instead of four.** From the BACB’s BCBA transition guide: “Beginning January 1, 2027, there will only be two pathways to BCBA certification… If you want to apply under pathway 3 or 4, you must do so—and meet all requirements—before January 1, 2027.” Pathway 3 (faculty teaching and research) and Pathway 4 (postdoctoral experience) close at the end of the year. The BACB has also announced that Pathway 2 will be removed in 2032. **Pathway 2 coursework is restructured.** The total stays at 315 hours, but the hours are regrouped: - Basic principles, theory and philosophy, and research methods each become standalone courses - Assessment and intervention must be covered across two freestanding courses - Organizational behavior management rises from 30 to 45 content hours - Ethics must be one standalone course Verified Course Sequence attestations are also ending. Per the BCBA Handbook, a VCS coordinator attestation on record as of December 31, 2025 can be used only until December 31, 2026. A trainee who relies on one and applies in 2027 needs their coursework checked against the new structure. **Fieldwork totals stay the same. The rules for accruing hours change.** Regular fieldwork is still 2,000 hours and concentrated fieldwork is still 1,500. What changes: 2022 requirements2027 requirementsConcentrated supervision10%7.5%Hours per month20–13020–160Client observationsOne per month60 minutes per month (90 for concentrated)Unrestricted activitiesAt least 60%At least 60% (unchanged)Monthly and final forms2022 formsNew 2027 forms **The exam stays the same.** The BCBA exam has been based on the 6th edition Test Content Outline since January 1, 2025, and the transition guide says “there are no upcoming changes.” What Changes for BCaBA Applicants --------------------------------- BCaBA pathways and degree requirements stay the same. The changes are in coursework and concentrated fieldwork: - **Coursework rises from 225 to 270 hours.** OBM goes from 15 to 45 hours, research methods from 30 to 45, and ethics from 30 to 45. - **Concentrated fieldwork drops from 1,000 to 800 hours.** Supervision stays at 10%. Regular fieldwork stays at 1,300 hours. - **The monthly cap rises to 160 hours** and observations are counted in minutes, as for BCBAs. - At least 40% of fieldwork hours must be unrestricted activities. There’s also a change for BCaBAs who are already certified. The 2027 BCaBA requirements say “there is no longer a difference in supervision percentage for the first 1,000 hours post-certification.” A newly certified BCaBA on your team will no longer face a heavier supervision load in their first 1,000 hours. The Trap: Hours That Count Under One Rule Set and Not the Other --------------------------------------------------------------- The hardest part of the transition is fieldwork that straddles January 1. The BACB’s rule is simple: “All supervised fieldwork must meet the requirements in place at the time you submit your certification application.” Hours are judged by the rules in force on the date the trainee applies, not the date the hours were earned. That creates mismatches in both directions: - **Concentrated hours supervised at 7.5% do not count under the 2022 rules.** If you drop a trainee to 7.5% supervision now and they apply before December 31, those hours fail. - **Hours supervised at 10% do count under 2027 rules**, because 10% exceeds the 7.5% floor. Supervising at the higher rate is the safe choice either way. - **A month over 130 hours fails under the 2022 rules.** If the trainee applies under 2022, the extra hours have to be cut. - **Observations must be logged both ways.** The 2022 rules count observations. The 2027 rules count minutes. A single 20-minute observation satisfies the first and not the second. The BACB’s advice to trainees whose application date is uncertain is to maintain separate documentation systems. In practice that means completing both the 2022 and 2027 monthly fieldwork forms every month, and keeping them for seven years. What Practices Should Do Before December 31 ------------------------------------------- **1. Sort your trainees this week.** Split them into two groups: those who can finish every hour, course, and document by mid-December, and those who will apply in 2027 or later. Each group needs a different plan. **2. Push the first group to file by early December.** Official transcripts come from the university registrar, and registrars slow down over the holidays. Ask for them now. Don’t treat December 31 as the target. Treat it as the last day something can arrive. **3. Supervise to the stricter rule until each trainee’s application date is known.** Keep concentrated trainees at 10% supervision and months at or under 130 hours. Log every observation with both a count and its duration. The 2027 rules accept everything the 2022 rules require, but not the reverse. **4. Check Pathway 2 coursework for anyone filing in 2027.** A trainee whose VCS attestation expires December 31 needs an advisor to confirm their coursework meets the freestanding-course and 45-hour OBM requirements, or they may face extra classes. **5. Audit your supervisors.** Every fieldwork supervisor still needs the BACB’s 8-hour supervision training on file before signing a supervision contract. Supervisors certified for less than a year need monthly consultation from a qualified BCBA. The 2027 BCBA requirements also list 4 supervision CEUs per recertification cycle, while the current handbook says 3. Confirm with the BACB how that applies to a cycle that spans January 1 before anyone plans around it. **6. Check the five-year window.** Fieldwork hours must be accrued within five years. A trainee who started fieldwork in late 2021 and is now pushed into 2027 may find their earliest hours have expired. Where Your Systems Fit ---------------------- Most of this checklist depends on supervision records: who supervised whom, when, for how long, and whether it was an observation. If those records live in a spreadsheet only one BCBA can open, you can’t sort trainees into groups this week, let alone run both rule sets for months. The BACB moved its documentation requirements toward minutes and percentages.
