ABA Medicaid rates, made readable.

Every state publishes what its Medicaid program pays for ABA, in a different file, format and place. We read each one and put the fee-for-service rates side by side, with the source for every number.

Methodology

Where the numbers come from.

What we collected

For each of the 50 states and DC we looked for the Medicaid fee-for-service (FFS) fee schedule that lists the ABA codes, read the rates from the state's own file or lookup tool, and recorded the effective date, the unit, the modifier or provider tier and a link to the source. Rates are shown as published; we do not round, adjust or convert them.

Most Medicaid members are in managed care plans, and those plans set their own rates by contract. The rates here are the state's FFS rates, which plans often use as a floor or a reference but do not have to match.

How the national median works

For 97153 we take one rate per state: the technician-tier rate (an RBT or technician provider type, or the HM modifier) where the state lists tiers, otherwise the state's single unmodified rate. It must be a published, 15-minute rate. States with no rate, a managed-care-only program, an unverified source or rates we do not republish are left out, as are states whose only rates carry program modifiers. 40 states qualify.

What each status means

Published
The state publishes a fee-for-service rate for these codes.
Proposed, pending approval
The state has proposed these rates, but federal approval is pending and they are not yet in effect. They are not counted in the national median.
Managed care only
ABA is paid only through managed care plans; the state publishes no FFS rate.
No FFS schedule
We could not find a current FFS fee schedule that lists these codes.
Not billed under CPT
The state pays ABA under other (HCPCS) codes, not these CPT codes.
Not verified
A rate may exist, but we could not read it from the primary source.
Not shown: licensing
The state publishes its schedule under a CPT license agreement for internal use, so we do not republish its rates.

The codes

Plain-language names, not the official code descriptors. "QHP" is the qualified health care professional, usually the BCBA.

Some states pay ABA under HCPCS codes (H- and T-codes) instead of, or as well as, these CPT codes. Where they do, the state's notes in the lookup list those rates.

  • These are Medicaid fee-for-service rates as published by each state. They are not commercial insurance rates and not managed care plan rates.
  • This page is general information, not billing, coding or legal advice.
  • Fee schedules change, often without notice. Verify every rate with the state Medicaid agency, or with the plan you bill, before you rely on it.
